Rough skin texture, refers to large open pores, excessive sebum (oil) secretion, coupled with signs of photodamage. Photodamage includes areas of hyperpigmentation, which are often referred to as sunspots, age spots or liver spots, fine, and coarse wrinkling, and benign, pre-cancerous and cancerous skin lesions. Intrinsic skin ageing is only partly responsible for undesired rough skin texture, which tends to occur in middle age.
Rough photodamaged skin can be effectively treated using many different revolutionary treatments now available in Ireland at Beacon Face & Dermatology. The specific treatment chosen depends on the presence or absence of precancerous or cancerous lesions coupled with the severity of sun damage.
The different treatment modalities available at Beacon Face & Dermatology include:
Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT)
Photo Dynamic Therapy is used specifically to treat pre cancerous and cancerous skin lesions using a non-invasive method. This involves the use of a topical photosensitiser, which is applied to the affected skin, and a light source, which is subsequently used on the affected area. The entire treatment takes approximately 3 hours. The treatment is well tolerated, relatively pain free and is a safe, highly effective alternative to surgery.
Revolutionary Plasmalite V Therapy
This treats both superficial photodamage such as pigmentations, visible spider veins or broken capillaries, background skin redness and deeper dermal photodamage by stimulating collagen production. The result is smoother, firmer skin.
Superficial Chemical Peels
Superficial chemical peels are used to treat coarse dry skin and areas of pigmentation. Over time they stimulate collagen remodelling which results in a “plumping effect” of the skin. The beauty of superficial chemical peels is that they are quick, well tolerated by the patient, and have little or no “down time”, allowing you to resume your normal daily activities straight away. After care regime involves regular moisturisation and daily use of broad-spectrum sun protection.
Topical Prescription Preparations for daily skin care regimes.
Photoprotection, namely avoidance of the midday sun when possible, physical sun protection such as sitting in a shaded area, wearing a wide brimmed hat, long sleeved shirt and sun glasses along with daily use of broad-spectrum sunscreens applied at regular intervals.
