Peels are used to rejuvenate the appearance of skin. A chemical solution is applied to smooth and improve the texture of skin by removing its damaged outer layers. The cell growth in the upper layers is stimulated and the skin is left fresh and glowing.
Peels can be used for facial blemishes, uneven skin pigmentation, and wrinkles. They are suitable for most skin types and this procedure is most commonly performed for cosmetic reasons, to enhance your appearance and self-confidence.
At Beacon Face & Dermatology we offer two types of facial peel.
A Glycolic Peel is made from sugar cane. It is a very light solution which when applied refreshes the upper layers of the skin. It can be considered to act like an exfoliant and only works on the surface of the skin.
These peels are particularly beneficial for rejuvenating and giving a fresher appearance to the skin but not for eliminating wrinkles or affecting pigmentation. Unlike the stronger treatments it does not cause the skin to peel and normal activity can be resumed immediately. For more dramatic results we recommend trying the Chemical Peel treatments.
Chemical Peels may or may not have the same glycolic base but are mixed into a stronger solution. It is applied lightly to the skin and causes it to peel away, revealing a new, fresh layer of skin beneath. This new skin is less wrinkled and shows far fewer signs of ageing.
During treatment you may experience a warm to somewhat hot sensation which lasts about five to ten minutes, this is followed by a slight stinging sensation*.
The reaction that occurs after a chemical peel is often likened to sunburn and lasts between three and four days. Your consultant dermatologist will advise the best after care programme for you but it is always advisable to use sun block on the area, as it is more sensitive to sunlight immediately after treatment.
When the skin heals, skin is lighter in colour, tighter, smoother and younger looking. Your skin will have a healthier glow than before, leaving you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. With proper care and continuing treatments you will notice an obvious improvement in the texture of your skin.
